FORENAP is using a driving simulator FAROS F230 devoted to training of both new and skilled drivers.
The device is located in an experimental room and various physiological parameters can be simultaneously recorded (electroencephalogram, eye movements, body movements, electrodermal responses, electrocardiogram, …). There can be several degrees of complexity of the road or motorway context and driving can be performed in both daytime or night time conditions.
Driving is a complex task, although it appears simple for the trained driver. It is repetitive, often long and monotonous, especially in night time conditions. The driving assessment shows often minors modifications of the driver’s attention abilities and vigilance level. It is a remarkable tool to show the effect of sleep deprivation or some drugs intakes. The simultaneous recording of various parameters allows a better detection of physiological modifications accompanying those state changes.
Driving simulation constitutes a realistic approach of a very common human activity without associating the risks and limitations of real driving. This test is easy to perform and has an undeniable friendly user approach.
